WRITING

I was Free Word Centre’s 2015-2016 Translator in Residence and am a member of the Translators Association. I’ve translated 16 books into Polish. My most recent published translations into English are: the New York Times bestseller, Renia Spiegel’s Renia’s Diary: A Young Girl’s Life in the Shadow of the Holocaust (Penguin Random House) and a contribution to How to Love and Child and Other Selected Works by Janusz Korczak (Vallentine Mitchell). My translation of Marcin Wicha’s Things I Didn’t Throw Out is out now from Daunt.

Other translations have been published online by Exchanges, The Smithsonian MagazineWords Without Borders, Public Seminar, Specimen (into Polish), New Panorama of Polish Literature, Przekrój (into English and Polish), New Books from Poland, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, ArtPapier and elsewhere. Other writing (reviews and cultural criticism) can be found here: The Linguist, In Other Words, Glasgow Review of Books (Olga Tokarczuk’s Flights and Drive Your Plow), New StatesmanAsymptotePEN Atlas, the British Library blog, The Scented Letter, European Literature Network and elsewhere. I’ve also organised, spoken at or interpreted many literary events featuring world-famous writers and translators, including Olga Tokarczuk, Deborah Levy, Edmund de Waal, Jacek Dehnel, Daniel Hahn, Antonia Lloyd-Jones, Adam Zagajewski, Wioletta Greg, Magdalena Tulli and Julia Fiedorczuk.

I’ve been interviewed by Jen Calleja for the Quietus, Caroline Alberoni for her Greatest Women in Translation series, and Wioletta Greg for Biuro Literackie. Nicola Thomis of The Sniff invited me to her podcast to speak about scents and words. You can also view videos from the London Book Fair from a panel discussion on “non-native” translation I chaired in 2016, a Polish translation slam I took part in in 2017, and a panel entitled Freedom of Movement & Artistic Expression: Writers Abroad in 2019. Other notable events included chairing a discussion about L2 and collaborative translation during Foreign Affairs’ tenth anniversary festival (2020) and interpreting a series of events with Olga Tokarczuk during her 2022 publicity tour for The Books of Jacob.

I’ve explored my interest in scents and literature through – among others – delivering the keynote lecture at the 2017 Annual Conference of the British Society of Perfumers and organising/chairing the Scented Words event at the British Library in 2018. I also gave two guest workshops on translating scent during Jen Calleja’s creative writing/translation masterclass at the British Library in 2018 and 2019 and at the National Centre for Writing in 2021. In 2019, I was a finalist in the Fragrance Foundation Jasmine Awards for perfume writing. I also write perfume-related copy.
